The New Verge

In 2020, Gazelli Art House in London presented The New Verge, the first joint exhibition of Azerbaijani artists Ashraf Murad and Farhad Khalilov. Curated by Farah Piriye, the exhibition brought together two distinct artistic languages shaped by the Soviet period and a shared commitment to artistic independence. Khalilov was represented by early portraits and landscapes alongside later abstract compositions, including works from his Meeting series. Presented alongside Murad's emotionally charged figurative paintings, Khalilov's expansive fields of colour reflected his enduring connection to the landscapes and horizons of Absheron. The exhibition offered London audiences an encounter with two different yet interconnected trajectories of twentieth-century Azerbaijani art.
